Balls made of chrome steel 1.3505 – AISI 52100
These are very widespread and are characterized by high hardness, toughness and wear resistance. They are often used under the highest loads in machine engineering.
Balls made of stainless steel 1.3541 / 1.4034 – AISI 420C and 1.4125 – AISI 440C
These are corrosion resistant and are used in applications that require resistance to rust and corrosion, such as food processing plants or medical devices.
Steel balls made from special materials
For example, for the highest requirements against corrosion made of soft steels such as 1.4301 – AISI 304 are also available on request. These are often used in contact with salt water, soaps, alkalis or acids.
Steel balls are used in ball screws as rolling elements between the spindle and the nut. They enable highly efficient transformation of rotational movements into longitudinal movements with low friction. The steel balls roll in the precisely manufactured raceway of the ball screw and transfer the load between the nut and the spindle.
Linear ball bearings and ball bushings
Linear ball bearings or ball bushings use steel balls to provide low-friction movement and high load carrying capacity in linear motion applications. The steel balls roll on the guide shaft. In this application, the balls are guided in a linear ball circulation system.
Ball guides
Steel balls in ball guides allow low-friction, backlash-free and precise guidance of moving parts in machines. They are able to accommodate high loads and can be used for rotary and lifting movements in various applications.
Linear guides & profile rail guides
Steel balls in linear and profile rail guides enable precise and low-friction movement along a profile rail. The balls move around in the carriage and enable the load to be transferred between the rail and the carriage. The steel balls are especially suitable for applications that require high stiffness and precission as well as high speeds.
Ball bearings
Steel balls are the central element in ball bearings, which can be found in almost every rotating machine component. They carry the load between the inner ring and outer ring and thus enable low-friction rotational movement.
Frequently Asked Questions about our steel balls
What advantages do steel balls offer compared to balls made from other materials?
Steel balls offer several advantages over balls made from other materials. They are highly wear-resistant, making them durable and robust. This hardness and load-capacity ensures a long life time. Additionally, steel balls are cost-effective and provide excellent price-performance, making them an ideal choice for various industrial applications.
How is the quality of steel balls ensured at SKT GmbH & Co. KG?
The quality of steel balls at SKT GmbH & Co. KG is ensured through high process reliability and the use of modern testing methods. These include optical measurement systems, hardness tests, surface roughness measurements, and non-destructive testing. Strict quality controls throughout the entire manufacturing process, combined with advanced testing procedures, ensure that the products meet the most demanding standards.
How quickly can SKT GmbH & Co. KG deliver steel balls?
SKT GmbH & Co. KG can deliver steel balls in standard sizes and grades directly from stock. For special requirements or non-stock items, the delivery time is typically around 3 weeks after order confirmation.
Which quality certificates and standards should steel balls meet?
Our steel balls comply with DIN 5401, an important quality standard that specifies the requirements for balls used in bearings and other technical applications. This certification ensures that our products deliver the highest precision and reliability.
What are the most common problems when using steel balls, and how can they be prevented?
The most common issues when using steel balls are wear, pitting, and corrosion. At SKT GmbH & Co. KG, these problems can be avoided, as we ensure optimal performance and durability of our steel balls through right material selection, correct sizing, and adequate lubrication.
